GRIEFING MEMORIAL - CEMETERY ĎÁBLICE

The reverent renovation of the Ďáblice Cemetery in Prague is designed as a sensitive intervention in a historic space that respects its unique character and seeks to highlight the turbulent events associated with this place. The aim of the project is to create a dignified environment for honoring the memory of the victims buried in mass graves.

ARCHITECTURE
The architectural elements of the design draw inspiration from the location itself and its history.
The main dominant element is the "Memory Register" – a suspended memorial consisting of 20,000 symbolic shards that refer to individual victims. These shards are suspended on fine steel cables, creating an impression of lightness and movement, while also referring to the shaft graves.
The material solution includes the use of reflective stainless steel sheet, which reacts dynamically to ambient light, and bronze, which symbolizes durability and historical significance.
Another important element is the interpretive wall, made of perforated bronze with texts commemorating historical events. The wall is complemented by a water feature, which adds a quiet, meditative dimension to the entire space.

The project for the reverent renovation of the Ďáblice Cemetery is conceived as a tribute to the victims buried there. The design focuses on preserving the historical memory and integrity of the site as much as possible, while complementing it with a modern layer of architectural elements that seek to visually and symbolically commemorate the tragic events of the past.

The architecture uses minimalist forms and noble materials such as bronze, steel, and stone, which, in dialogue with nature and history, become witnesses to memory. The memory register, the main dominant element of the project, represents a modern memorial that hangs over the space like a light cloud of memories. Its reflective surface reflects the surrounding light, giving the place a constantly changing appearance and reminding visitors that memory is alive and changeable.

The design also includes the placement of furniture that ties in with the Cubist concept of the cemetery's original architecture and serves not only an aesthetic but also a functional purpose within the memorial space.
